ARCHITECTURE DESIGN III
ARC60308 MARCH 2022 INTAKE
SEMESTER 3 MODULE
In the curriculum, "experiencing space and place" in architecture is emphasised. Students are introduced to the idea of neighbourhood and community in the course, as well as an examination of the spatial typologies and poetics in architecture. In their preliminary design work, students investigate and create a variety of spatial typologies (such as linear, spiral, spine, and focal) for a straightforward living area that examines architectural experiences and tectonics. The principal project then is designing a modest-scale community building (such as a gallery or small library) in an open landscape or suburban setting that engages with the geography, history, and socio-cultural activities of the site. In order to create an architectural form that is tectonically expressive, practical, and responsive to its site, the design work investigates the merging of plan and section. The design exercise also emphasises the part played by society in the creative architectural design process and ties to spaces with values and culture.

PROJECT 1
Poetic Journey Structure
A Spatial Translation (the tropical beach)
The aim is to romanticise a typical Malaysian tropical beach and translate it into an exciting narrative journey that will then be translated into two distinct solo poetic journey structures. One narrative, which will eventually become two structures, must be developed by the students. From the same narrative or storyline, one is presented as a concentric journey structure, and the other is presented as a linear journey structure, with small modifications as needed. Once they get the models, the students will use them to make a poetic video describing the journey.
Learning Outcome:
-
To develop design by carefully considering spatial typologies, section-plan relationships, contextual conditions, and human scale, natural light, materiality, and textures.
-
Communicate design to peers, teachers, and industry architects through excellent visual and emotive vocal presentations.
PROJECT 2A
The Discovery Center (Genius Loci)
Site Analysis, Site Response and Design Concept
To effectively distribute the assigned duties in order to complete the site analysis. Five divisions of work must be finished in less than two weeks. Except for the site plan, site sections, site model, and the visceral board, which must be manually presented, everything must be displayed as a slide show.
Learning Outcomes:
-
Create designs by deliberately taking into account spatial typologies, the relationship between sections of a plan, the surrounding environment, and factors such as human scale, natural light, materiality, and textures.
-
Create designs based on the personality and circumstances of the site context by documenting, interpreting, and analysing the physical site conditions and "genius loci" of place.
PROJECT 2B
The Discovery Center
(Visitor Center for Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest)
Designing a structure that would enable users to "DISCOVER" information about the people, places, activities, culture, history, etc. related to Tanjung Tuan Recreational Forest is a requirement for students. The Discovery Center's programme should concentrate on the location's geography, inhabitants, cultures, and history. The key quality or essential quality of the location as well as its distinctive or intriguing feature must be identified by the students in order to effectively capture the essence of the location (genius loci). After that, it will be transformed into a story that will help with the Discovery Center's design and route.
Learning Outcomes:
-
Identify and address fundamental issues with building materials, construction, and the environment.
-
Create and defend a design for a small community building in an open or suburban setting after analysing and exploring the site, user needs, environmental sustainability, buildability, and spatial poetics.
-
Present design to peers, instructors, and professional architects through excellent visual and verbal communication.
REFLECTION
Discipline Specific Knowledge
I was able to understand ethical issues, professional practice and put theories into practice of design thinking process after doing research and experience on this assignment given tasks.
Communication Skills
I have learned to communicate with my teammates, reaching out to them to work together.
Interpersonal Skills
I'm able to learned that being in a group is about "us" and not just "me", and listen to my teammate's opinions and make great possible work.
Thinking and Problem Solving Skills
I'm able to think critically and creatively to come up with an effective solution that corresponded to my problem.
Lifelong learning
I had learned independently and also be intellectually engaged on the work.
