ARCHITECTURE DESIGN I
ARC60208 MARCH 2022 INTAKE
SEMESTER 1 MODULE
The purpose of this introductory design module is to introduce and clarify design using the expression of one's perception of one's "self," one's body, and the concepts of construction and materiality. A series of studio-based exercises and tasks will be given to the students in order to introduce them to the essential techniques, ideas, and strategies of design thinking and simple spatial design. Understanding anthropometrics and developing intrapersonal space with creative exercises including the user's experiences and motions will improve this.
PROJECT 1
Geometry and Form: Architectural Design Elements and Principles
In a workshop-based explorative studio, the design project introduces basic understanding of design principles, processes, and approaches in generating ideas, developing design, and translating it into form. The project encourages students to explore their critical and creative sides by exploring design principles each week and applying them to tattoo stamps and models. Through a series of workshops, the students will collaborate closely with your group members and exchange ideas and thoughts. The project's outcome is an architectural self-exploration; students are free to explore forms and techniques that demonstrate creativity, identity, and rigour through your model and tattoo stamps.
PROJECT 2
Project 2: Structure and Body: Material, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration
Project 2 will require students to design and build a 1: 1 scale shading structure for Uni Square at Taylor's University. Students will work with bamboo to understand its nature and characteristics, as well as how they can be used in design with basic construction knowledge. Students will investigate construction details such as joints, joinery, and structural quality. The following step is to incorporate their design intention (from project 1) and structure into the 1:1 scale construction with anthropometry and ergonomics. Students will develop their design through a series of workshops, tests, and investigations involving scaled'study models,' which will explore architectural elements and principles with anthropometry and ergonomics. The final design will be created using a 1:1 structure and drawings.
PROJECT 3
Space and Sensory: Self Exploration through Spaces
Students will revisit their structure from Project 2 and further develop it into a sensory space to anticipate and accommodate users' needs and emotions in Project 3. They will identify a dominant theme based on their knowledge of design elements and principles (from Projects 1 and 2) and enhance the structure to create a poetic architectural representation as well as their own reinterpretation of their structure through a series of spaces. Students will experiment with various materials such as wood, steel, and concrete. As a first-year university student, their sensitivity to articulation and mastery of spatial experience should ignite a sensorial experience for you to express your personal emotions.
REFLECTION
Discipline Specific Knowledge
I was able to understand ethical issues, professional practice and put theories into practice of design thinking process after doing research and experience on this assignment given tasks.
Communication Skills
I have learned to communicate with my teammates, reaching out to them to work together.
Interpersonal Skills
I'm able to learned that being in a group is about "us" and not just "me", and listen to my teammate's opinions and make great possible work.
Thinking and Problem Solving Skills
I'm able to think critically and creatively to come up with an effective solution that corresponded to my problem.
Lifelong learning
I had learned independently and also be intellectually engaged on the work.
